I haven’t been using my camera as much as I would like. Just haven’t been inspired lately

Ronan discovered that he loves water today.

I had a craving

Beer and freshly-made rice krispie treats. Carl declared beer night. We haven’t had alcohol in the house since Sunday.

I forgot to oil the foil. If you didn’t know, I can’t stand sticky on my hands. Peeling to foil off made me very twitchy.

So for realies, I’m making Mussaman Curry for dinner tonight. It’s currently simmering on the stove. The smell is divine. I can’t believe that I used to hate curry. It’s so wonderfully complex.

Orientation

BokBok
I felt like this today. So much information.

So I set my schedule for Fall quarter at the UW. Apparently having 2 years of Spanish in high school only counts for acceptance into the UW, so I still need another year of foreign language. With my grand dream of retiring to Italy (even though I have yet to visit), I chose to start taking Italian. To fulfill VLPA credits (Visual, Literary, & Performing Arts credits, I am taking a class in Native Art of the Pacific Northwest Coast and the 3rd class is Introduction to Asian-American Literature. It’s an odd mixing of cultures this time around: Italian, Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest, and Asian American. I think it will be a blast.

There is room on my schedule to spend lunch with a soon-to-be-assigned volunteer kid through Big Brothers Big Sisters one day a week as well as still maintain the front desk of Jubilee Women’s Shelter one afternoon a week. I’ll definitely need to pick up a scooter when I return from my trip to make those two commute days easier but for now, biking and busing in combination will work.

I put up a post on Freecycle for a toolbox and this guy in Greenwood (or someplace) replied back with an offer for an almost new toolbox that is the perfect size for our needs. Awesome!

Oh and I forgot about this part. My adviser and I worked out the numbers and it looks like I can double major in Psych and Soc if we plan it right. I’ll have a few quarters with 18 credits and will have to take summer classes next year, but I am A-OK with that.

Carl is (finally) hooking up the stereo and printer together with the wireless setup.  This way, I don’t have to hook my laptop up to the printer next to his computer to print and can play playlists from the laptop through the big speakers while I’m cooking.  Now we can move the iPod stereo into the bedroom.

We bought a wooden drying rack for clothes.  I’m currently air-drying towels on the balcony.  Not only will this save us $1 per dryer load, but also not waste so much electricity and cause so much pollution.  Not everything will go on the rack, but even cutting the amount in half is significant.

My doctor declared the surgery a complete success and said the bones are fully healed.  There is some residual tissue pain lingering but that should be gone within two months.  I just passed the 4 month mark.  He said keep doing what I am doing and he’ll see me in December for surgery #2.  We discussed the insurance situation (the company is no longer accepting Premera) and it turns out that it’s more of a political move and he is guessing that within 2 or 3 months, they will accept Premera again, in time for my surgery for sure.  If not, he will work with me to find a good surgeon to take care of me.

Tomorrow is my orientation and registration with the University of Washington.

But some urban gardeners living high above terra firma are committed to sticking with their worms.

“When you don’t have a yard, you do the best you can,” says Wesa Anderson, 28, a Capitol Hill resident who, until a year ago, had a balcony garden of tomatoes, bell peppers, Thai red chili peppers, green beans, spinach, basil and rosemary.

Anderson plans to start a new garden after a trip abroad.

On her shopping list: a worm bin that fits under the kitchen sink.

Hehe.

Camping

Accidentally left my camera on 30-second exposure, then figured it out after waving the camera around for a few seconds trying to figure out why the shutter wouldn’t close.

Asia Trip Planning

Via an email thread my sister is having with someone at The Gibbon Experience: “As of July 14th, the Gibbon Experience programme switches to rainy season schedule: all guests will experience the same programme. This COMMON PROGRAMME TO ALL GUESTS consists of one night in the “classic” tree houses and one night in the “waterfall” tree houses. Guests to the gibbon Experience will therefore have access to the whole canopy infrastructures of the Bokeo National Park. Their second day will include a 2-hour trekking to reach their new tree house.”

The plan so far is to fly into Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand) on the 11th, hang out for a few days to get our bearings, then head into Laos to the Gibbon Experience. After that, I believe we’re heading through Vietnam (if we can get our Visas figured out in the next few days), then through Cambodia. Angkor Wat is one of the last destinations we have in mind, and I can’t wait to take a million photos.
